and ohio behind in both. we were laughing about the expectations setting on both sides but, governor romney has to shake things up, wednesday night, doesn't he. >> he is going to. every time mitt romney has been confronted in this campaign with one of these moments he has come through in a debate and performed extraordinarily well, laying out his vision very clearly and also contrasting himself and his vision with whoever his opponent was at that time. i have absolute confidence, george, all you will be shaking your head it is a brand new race. jenna: new jersey governor chris christie, making a bold prediction, how about that? the bold prediction related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how bi

during the primary season. you got a few times for both mitt romney and president obama to show their stuff, this first debate is huge. largely because the race is tight, in the battleground states, the president seems to be really gaining an advantage. and generally, you know, you can't decide as a voter to fire somebody until you're sure that the replacement can do a good job. this is that moment when you're going to have a huge audience and if you're mitt romney, you have to explain to american voters why you can be commander in chief, and why you would be the replacement for president obama. >> isn't so much of this, though, leading up to wednesday night, the lowering of the expectations game, but to quote candy crowley, whenno s she was talking about chris christie, apparently chris christie didn't get the memo, but we showed this poll that shows that americans very much so expect the president to win this debate with mitt romney. might that be a good thing for mitt romney goinging into this with the lower numbers? >> sure. lower -- i never talked to as many romney advisers

have faced at least in my memory. now that gov. romney has made it official and picked paul ryan -- they are both good men. there are family men. they are both -- no. i do not need your boos. we need your help. i want to be straight with you. [applause] i have a bad reputation of being a straight. telling you what i think. all kidding aside. with picking paul ryan, what gov. romney did is he has given clear definition to all of the vague assertions he was making during his primary campaign. he talked a lot about a lot of the things paul ryan is talking about, but never with any detail. by picking paul ryan and buying out why he picked paul ryan, he picked him because he does represent the ideological -- how can i say this, the center of the republican party. he said, that is why i am taking paul ryan. now, we do not have to guess about what gov. romney means when he talks about medicare, social security, and education. it is almost like two incumbents running. paul ryan -- i mean this sincerely. paul ryan introduced a budget that past. it lays out in stark detail what they would

got both candidates coming here. you got mitt romney coming this morning and right after that, the president. >> i invited him. i called him and invited him. we did it four years ago, remember? senator mccain came and brought governor palin with him. and if you look whatever you think about his tax return, given a substantial amount of money to charity, he might want to talk about that today. >> i heard what the secretary said yesterday about elites not paying taxes. are you comfortable with a lot of the talk that's been going on, the democrat primary? and even at the democratic national convention that seemed to border on class war fare when you yourself said if america wants to be more competitive in the 21st century, we are going to have to lower corporate tax rates. if america is more competitive in the 21st century, we have to look at how we make this country more competitive -- >> i think lower the corporate tax rates but i think it's worth pointing out that of the 33 countries and oecd, the group of wealthier nations, only chile and mexico take a smaller percentage of i

think it will remain? >> i think time will tell. there's certainly an effort on the part of both president obama and his republican challenger, mitt romney, to have a serious second look at sanctions, to try to figure out what additional economic measures are necessary to bring iran's nuclear program to heel. i think that, to a large extempt, is going to determine whether there is military action against iran. quite simply, the sanctions we've applied so far are not having the requisite impact on iran, and more needs to be done. jenna: that was a very interesting editorial in the ine washington post" this week, you said just to review for our viewers, the sanctions are working in some ways, they're not working in others, and can they need to be enforced greater, in your opinion. let's talk about what the american people should expect or trust in this process. you know, why should the american people trust diplomacy when it comes to iran? has there been any evidence that sanctions or diplomacy in the past has worked with this regime and this country? >> well, those are two separat

story for the last week or so of them all lowering expectations on both sides of the debate. but somebody in the -- well, the surrogate in the romney camp didn't get the memo. >> that's a great way to put it. we're talking about chris christie, the outspoken governor of new jersey. so take a listen in his own words. >> here's the great news for republicans, we have a candidate who is going to do extraordinarily well on wednesday night. the first time he has the opportunity to stand on the same stage with the president of the united states and the first time a majority of the people who are going to vote in this race will have an opportunity to make that direct comparison and see the two of them. and when they do, i've seen mitt romney do this before. he's going to come in wednesday night, lay out his vision for america, he's going to contrast what his view is with what the president's record is and the president's view for the future. and this whole race is going to be turned upside down come thursday morning. >> wait, wait, mr. christie, the whole idea is to lower the bar f

and his claim is mostly true, both candidates are spending the day off the campaign trail practicing for tomorrow's big day. mitt romney is softening his stance on a key immigration issue and now he is saying he will honor temporary work permits, allow them to stay in the united states because of president barack obama's recent executive order. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> don't forget, we will bring you the coverage live and the debate will be followed by a special addition of our ktvu news. >>> and they are warning about identity theft after several male thefts were reported in novato. 2 dozen mailboxes were reported on school road and crest road. the mail stolen included personal checks, credit cards and other items containing financial information. if you have any information about these thefts, get in contact with the police. >>> in berkeley, get in contact with the city lie -- sit-lie ordinance where people would be banned during certain hours. some say it's good for business but some protesters say the law targets homeless

tell you, living in washington and traveling around the country, i think you both know here in massachusetts, there is such a disgust with washington because of dysfunction and washington does not work. the question about bipartisanship here, senator, let me ask you this. you said a mitt romney that he is one of your strongest and earliest backers. he said it comes to dealing with the economic issues, there is no one i would trust more than governor romney. would you be a reliable ally of a president romney? >> i think he pointed out in your initial comment about this functionality in washington. when i went down there, i thought it was dysfunctional. when i got there, it was even worse. it still is. if you see it everyday. in speaking to the independent voters of massachusetts and being that independent of voice. i spoke about 50% with my party and 50% with the other party. that is a lot different than what professor warren would do. i need not work for anybody. i cannot work for president obama, mitt romney, mitch, harry reid -- i work for the people of massachusetts. i am

found him up 9 points in florida. perhaps even more surprisingly, voters in both states now trust president obama more than mitt romney to turn the economy around. this really isn't looking like the election anyone expected. so what happened? the predominant theory seems to be that mitt romney is an inept candidate, his repeated gaffes have set him back against a weak incumbent. that may be true. the facts suggest something deeper and more important going on. the economic recovery may be a bit morrow bust than we all assumed. the number of jobs created from march 2011 to march 2012 was underestimated by 380,000. taking those new jobs into account he has overseen a net positive 125,000 jobs added to the economy even if you take into account the massive job losses from the financial crisis at the start of his term. on friday the university of michigan's consumer confidence index reached its second highest level in five years. joining us to talk about this is ro khanna, author of "entrepreneural nation: why manufacturing is still key to america's future." deputy secretary in the oba

. it is a fundamental lie. and mitt romney ought to be ashamed of himself for continuing to say it when he knows that prime minister netanyahu and defense minister ehud barak have both said this administration has the strongest security and military cooperation with israel it has ever had. ever. and the president has taken steps to put america in a position to deal with iran with whatever eventuality may be necessary, and i mean whatever eventuality may be necessary. the president made that crystal clear in his speech at the united nations. and, yesterday, prime minister netanyahu reinforced that by frankly praising the president for what he said at the u.n. and talking about how we are in sync. our intelligence and military communities are on the same it timeline with respect to iranian nuclear development. and i think yesterday the president -- prime minister netanyahu drew a line which frankly the president has already drawn not with a cartoon and with that kind of a fdispla but the president has said point blank american policy is not a matter of containment, it is a matter of prevention. th

the debate worthwhile, especially with these two guys who are both cautious campaigners and like to filibuster their way through answers with lots of word salad they throw out there. mitt romney has to be worried about getting overeager or getting, again, flustered, making an unforced error like that. megyn: it's interesting because the president wants everybody to believe that mitt romney is so smooth and so great, we've seen there he's had gaffes, and the president has had gaffes, and we don't know which version of the candidates will show up on wednesday night, but the last thing i want to ask you about is as we watch together, because we went to those debates together and talked about them after every one, romney improved. he definitely improved by the end. we went through more than 20 of them. and by that critical debate he had in, i think it was florida, where he needed to take out gingrich, he got much more aggressive, and he succeeded in helping redefine the republican primary. here's a sample of romney at what many thereafter said was his best performance. >> mr. speaker

think they call that must-see tv. martha: you have got both of these candidates focusing and work on their questions and preparing for anything that could be thrown at them. governor romney says he believes tomorrow's debate is about more than just wing or losing. >> people want to know who is going to win and who is going to score the punches and make the biggest difference in the arguments they make. and there will be the scoring of the wing and losing. in my view of it's not so much the wing and losing and the president and myself. it's about something bigger than that. bill: good morning you, bob. you believe romney has to be aggressive without looking desperate. explain. >> he has got to land some punches and show a lot of energy. i'm sure he will have a lot of stats against the president. i'm sure you will heart last 43 months we have had unemployment more than 8%. but he's got to be aggressive and come pout swinging. this is the most important night of mitt romney's life. bill: he talked about something bigger than that, and that's a path forward for america. he talked abou

for president that we have faced in my memory. now that governor romney has made it official and he has picked paul ryan and i mean this sincerely, these are both good family man and bay --no, i don't need your boos, we need your help. i want to be strict review -- -- i want to be straight with you. i have a bad reputation for being strait, telling you what i think. sometimes all of us -- all kidding aside, picking paul ryan, what governor romney did is he has given clear definition to all those big assertions he was making during his primary campaign. he talked a lot about a lot of things that paul ryan is talking about but the war in many details. by picking paul ryan and laying out why he was picking him, he picked paul ryan because paul ryan represents the ideological -- how can i say it -- the center of the republican party and the house of representatives. he said that is why he is picking him. now we don't have to guess about what governor running means when he talks about medicare vaguely and social security and education and all these things. it is almost like two incumbents running.

o at hsaid, isn't the larger issue that both of these candidates have dismissed about obligation to the american people to talk to us. the president hasn't had a press conference. thpresident doesn't take serious questions from journalists. governor romney doesn'take seriquestions from d h any specifics from governor romney or really the president. >> on this issue, though, i think it is a serious problem and thpresident st talks about bumps in the road in the middle east. jon meacham, there's chaos. o decides he has to wait a few days to protest riots in our embassy. you've got the muslim brotherhood seeming to gain traction there. let's hope it tur out well. you've got the president, i believe, making a terrible mistake quesoning egypt is our ally or not. you keep calling them your ally until there's no other option. 20,000 dead in syria, a u.s. ambassador killed in benghazi. all the warning signs, the ambassador's own diary says he was fearful for his safety. the u.s. government giving three days warning that riots could ensue and people could be killed in the u.s.embassy. thi
